Why Focus on Alcohol Involved Collisions?

Driving under the influence (DUI) is a serious problem across the nation, state, and right here in Napa County. We all pay for DUI problems. The costs certainly affect the drinking driver ($18,762), the victim (priceless) and our community systems of law enforcement, health care, the courts and more.

The City of Napa is ranked 13th highest out of 104 comparison cities in California for alcohol-involved collisions.  California Office of Traffic Safety http://www.ots.ca.gov/Media_and_Research/Rankings/default.asp

*Napa County is ranked 11th highest of the 58 counties for alcohol-involved collisions. California Office of Traffic Safety http://www.ots.ca.gov/Media_and_Research/Rankings/default.asp

*Rates of heavy drinking in Napa County are higher than statewide averages. (California Health Interview Survey 2007, http://www.chis.ucla.edu/).

*Heavy drinkers
tend to be more likely to believe they have adequate driving abilities and therefore more likely to drink and drive. (Alcoholism Clinical and Experimental Psychology, May 2008)
